Bilaspur (Chhattisgarh), 4 November 2025 — A passenger MEMU train collided with a stationary goods (freight) train near Bilaspur in Chhattisgarh on Tuesday afternoon, killing several people and injuring many more as rescuers worked through the night to pull survivors from the wreckage. The accident has closed the route temporarily and prompted an immediate probe by Indian Railways.
What happened (verified facts)
- Time & place: The collision took place at around 4:00 pm on 4 November 2025, on the section close to Bilaspur station — reports place the impact between Gatora and Bilaspur / Jairamnagar on the South East Central Railway zone.
- Trains involved: A local passenger MEMU service (reported as the Korba–Bilaspur MEMU / Gevra–Bilaspur local in various reports) struck a stationary goods train from behind. The force of the impact caused passenger coaches to mount freight wagons and derail in places, trapping people inside.
- Casualties and injuries: Early reports give differing tolls as rescue efforts continue. Initial counts reported between 4 and 8 fatalities and dozens injured; some outlets quoted “at least seven” killed while others reported up to eight fatalities as teams continued to recover bodies. Several injured are in serious condition and have been moved to hospitals in Bilaspur and nearby medical centres. Authorities caution figures are provisional and likely to be revised.
- Rescue response: Railway and state emergency teams — including the Railway Protection Force (RPF), local police, district administration and medical teams — were dispatched immediately. Fire-and-rescue teams used cutting equipment to free trapped passengers; ambulances transferred the injured to Bilaspur hospitals. Helplines were activated by the railways for relatives seeking information.
